For the Mesoamericans, the ballgame was an important part of their ritual, with the intention of hitting the players with a hard rubber ball. Of course the players were allowed to protect their bodies and reduce the possibilities of injury, but compared to any other ancient games played, like board games and others this was a very dangerous game. Most probably everyone was allowed to participate and others watched it, and interestingly the game being was one that of leisure.
